Truth or dare laws: Which ones would you obey?

Terry, Montana
By: Bob van der Valk

I heard an interesting tidbit at the annual Terry Roping Club meeting held recently at the Lazy JD Bar and Restaurant in Fallon, Montana.

Mark Dolatta, describing some of the local colorful Terry history, said that in Montana a gathering of four or more Indians (p.c. Native Americans) is considered a war party and you are allowed to shoot them on sight. (more…)

Saint Nicholas is a legendary figure who, in many Western Cultures, brings gifts to the homes of the good children during the late evening and overnight hours of Christmas Eve, December 24th or on his Feast Day, December 6th (Saint Nicholas Day). This legend has part of its basis in tales concerning the historical figure of gift giver Saint Nicholas. (more…)

Yesterday, I was finally able to do something I’ve wanted to do for a very long time.

I got to visit the Evelyn Cameron Gallery of her pioneer photography in Terry, Montana.

Never heard of her? That’s OK–most people haven’t, even though she is in the Cowgirl Hall of Fame and was the subject of a 2005 PBS documentary. (more…)

City of Havre Alone is Reason Enough to Visit North-Central Montana

We first learned about Havre thanks to Debbie Vandeberg at the Chamber of Commerce. We were looking for a Montana destination with character, personality, and enough fun to keep short-attention-span tourists like us entertained while we checked out the town and wrote up all the attractions. Debbie didn’t just engage us, she pointed us in the right direction, and what we’ve found is Havre, Montana. It’s a city with a long, rich history, unique cultural attractions, a large and growing base of local citizens, and an overall fascinating town. (more…)

Billings Visitor Center Equals Great People in Great Town

A town so far east we barely made it out there on our first trip is Billings. Once you’re there, you’re half way from the Pacific Ocean to Minneapolis, and with our schedule getting busier and busier with each passing day, we weren’t even sure if we’d make it out there, but boy are we glad that we did.

What’s So Great About Montana… Besides Everything?

We spent three weeks in Montana last June/July and another three weeks last August, so when we announced our nine week tour for this summer, friends and family said, “Boy, you guys sure like Montana, don’t you?” Well yes we do, and there are a number of reasons why. Rather than email every single person individually, we decided to publish a story detailing some of the many reasons why big sky country is a place that, once you see it, you just can’t get it out of your head.

Butte Visitor Center Must-First-Stop in Historic Mining Town

As an ever-traveling tourist, it’s easy to give up the easy “gimme” destinations in any given town. If you’re in San Francisco, you need to check out the Golden Gate Bridge, or if you’re in Shanghai you need to check out the Great Panda, but when you’re in any town, you really should stop in the local visitors center, and Butte Montana has a great one.

Guidebook Review: “Hidden Montana” from Ulysses Press

Our crew has only worked in the travel writing field since 2001, but we’ve hit the market pretty hard since then. Even when baby Brendan was just one year old, he was himself a foreign bureau chief, and we could tell because people gathered around him like a local celebrity. Still, almost every guide book is every bit as good as the next, but “Hidden Montana” from Ulysses Press is something different, and in a good way.
